Pune property tax hike opposed by citizens
The draft civic budget which was presented recently with an 8% hike in property tax in Pune for 2013-14 has been opposed by a citizen group in the city.
Sajag Nagrik Manch, a citizen group, has opposed the said hike in property tax for properties in Pune. However, the municipal commissioner wants the hike to be implemented which can be done by pushing up the general tax structure which is also a part of the property tax.
The civic body is yet to recover Rs 1000 crore as property tax and planning to increase its revenue by this way instead of recovering the dues. As per the citizen group, it will be an injustice for those who pay their taxes regularly.
Also, the citizen group demanded the civic body should publish audited reports of tax collections. They had demanded the same under Right to Information act (RTI), but nothing were made available to them.
The civic authorities have to say that since there has been no rise in civic taxes for the last three years, it is high time to propose a hike.
The budget in its draft mode will go to the standing committee now for further discussion followed by a debate in the general body for a final decision.
