Punjab and Haryana Court Dismisses Petition against naming Mullanpur as New Chandigarh
The High Court of Punjab and Haryana has dismissed a petition to not to name Mullanpur as New Chandinagar. The bench in its observation said orally that there is no harm in the name citing and also there are similar cases in rest of a India like Mumbai named as Navi Mumbai. However the statement has not amused the petitioner Pankaj Chandgothia and he said that he will take the matter up to Supreme Court of India.
Earlier the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), had renamed Mullanpur as New Chandigarh in a publicity campaign. The name “New Chandigarh” had appeared in a brochure of GMDA’s upcoming project “Eco City”. Chandgothia further said that it was sanctimonious to name Chandigarh once again as it will defame the rich history and cultural past of the city.
