Punjab government to offer 10% rebate for property tax defaulters

 

LUDHIANA: The state government’s recommended movement to endeavor a 10% rebate on those who have defaulted on paying property tax is creating heartburn amongst those who paid the tax on time.

Punjab local bodies minister Brahm Mohindra is assumed to publish the rebate shortly. Taxpayers are of the opinion that if the state government had to declare a rebate indeed for those paying the tax slow and late, they could likewise have paid the tax on their impulse and preference.

The recommended rebate has also induced tax collection to a standstill as property owners are now expecting a notice. The minister is also exacted to do away with interest and penalty on property tax for delinquents. A source in the MC said the notice had been granted for the legal theory and would be circulated soon.

Sarabha Nagar resident Rahul Verma stated he ever paid property tax and additional dues before the deadline, contemplating it to be his “duty”. “But it is disinclining to view the government provide a possibility to defaulters who did not pay continuing house tax yet before 2013-14 and had property tax pending considering 2013,” he stated, computing that would influence people not to pay their taxes on time.

An MC Officer, who did not want to be identified, stated the rebate movement would also influence their working. “Earlier, we were inflicting a 20% penalty and accrediting them 18% interest for delinquency in payment. From next year, we don’t how we will drive the tax,” continued the officer.
The MC is yet to accumulate about Rs 27 crores from property tax defaulters of past years. The practice is that taxpayers acquire a 10% rebate for paying the tax by September end. They don’t have to pay anything more extra between October and December. There is a 10% penalty for those who pay the tax within January and March 20. From March 21, all taxpayers have to pay a penalty of 20% on the tax and an 18% yearly interest on the amount.
