Rebate in property tax to ex-servicemen
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has now extended the 50% rebate in property tax to ex-servicemen residing in the city. This came in a year after the State government issued a gazette notification.
Though the gazette notification was issued on April 24, 2012, the BBMP had not implemented it. Due to this, several ex-servicemen, who sought the rebate at the help centres while paying their property tax, were disappointed.
As on December 31, 2012, there were 35,549 ex-servicemen, among which 7,537 were widows who were eligible for the 50 percent rebate, said sources. Since the notification was not implemented, none of them could avail the rebate.
According to sources, the staff was not aware of the gazette notification. They claimed that they did not receive any order from the BBMP directing them to implement the gazette notification and offer 50 percent rebate. Most ex-servicemen had to pay their full property tax as they were left with no other choice.
BBMP Revenue Deputy Commissioner said that the 50 percent rebate was imposed this fiscal. He also said that the gazzetted notification was issued in April 2012 but the notice reached the BBMP by August. However, the ex-servicemen had already paid their taxes by that time.
The ex-servicemen can avail 50% rebate for one residential property by filing a form and submit it with required documents at the BBMP’s help centers.
They can avail the rebate for the tax paid last year and the excess will be adjusted with the tax due this fiscal.
