Residential structures in heritage list sparks debate in Mumbai

No Comments Sub Category:Mumbai,Realty News,Residential Real Estate Posted On: Oct 04, 2012

A controversy has been stirred up due to the inclusion of old residential structures of Mumbai in the heritage list.

The BDD chawls with cracked walls, leaky pipelines and dismal interiors have residents living in it since the British Era.

Residents living in these chawls have been hoping for a re-development, however, the inclusion of these chawls in the heritage list has wiped away their hopes.

According to chawl residents, there are big families living in small rooms and hence they will not be able to increase the size of the rooms if the chawl is included in the heritage precinct list.

Unlike the chawl residents, people from posh Mumbai areas prefer to preserve Mumbai’s old world charm.
