Residents demand to shift dump yard out of city

Comments(2) Sub Category:Chennai,Cities,Civic Issues Posted On: Nov 20, 2012
The residents of Vellalore recently staged a protest from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. demanding the civic body should shift the dump yard out of the city.
According to R. Selvaraj, president of the residents’ organisation, the civic body has not done anything and it did not send segregated waste as mandated by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board but the Coimbatore Corporation allege that they have spent money to establish a waste processing facility.
The ground water in these localities has turned yellow and with a bonus filthy smell because of the dumping of waste without segregation. The problem does not end here though. The residents of Anbu Nagar, Podanur, Shriram Nagar and Konavaikalpalayam have to run away because of frequent fire and burning of waste at the site to other areas.
During monsoon, the odour from the dumped waste is torturous, and so is the fly menace and the residents are forced to keep their doors closed most of the time.
