Residents of Housing Societies Receive Notices to Clear Dues for Elections

Housing societyWith the elections around the corner, the government has called upon the members of the management committees to decide on their election agenda and some have been issued ultimatums to clear dues in order to be eligible for vote.

Many housing societies having received notices have woken up to the call sent by the State Government whose management committee elections are to be conducted by December 31st.

There are over 70,000 housing societies in the Mumbai metro region. 30,000 out of these 70,000 housing societies are due on their elections for the past few years. More than 500 other such societies have administrators who are ruling the committee disputes. The election for these areas have been due ever since new bylaws by governing societies and a new election authority for cooperative bodies have been formed

Ajit Padwal, a resident of the Shankar Niwas Cooperative Housing Society in Shivaji Park mentions of having received notices for clearing society dues as the defaulters’ names will be struck off the voters’ lists. The administrator of the society has been asked to conduct elections as soon as possible. He had been appointed about a year back and has been dealing with most of the issues pertaining to the Housing Society. Padwal claims that the notice sent to residents had asked them to clear the maintenance and repair fund dues within a span of four days. Another resident of Shankar Niwas voiced his complaint stating that a minimum of a fortnight’s time should have been provided to residents for clearing of outstanding dues. The total estimate made of the dues is worth Rs.1.11 lakh and the society has 19 flats.

In another such society, the Acropolis Society at Little Bibbs Road, Malabar Hill conducted a society meeting on Saturday headed by Chairman Ashok Malkani. The main points of the agenda of the meeting were the management of committee elections which includes tasks such as submission of details to the registrar, calculating the number of exligible voters including senior voters etc. The society has a total of 34 flats and will be having an election through voice vote. Malkani also emphasised the need to study the process due to the new bylaws.
