Residents suffer as authorities turning blind eye towards road issues

1 Comment Sub Category:Awareness,Cities,Community,Delhi-NCR Posted On: Mar 01, 2013

Residents of Triveni Apartments in Sheikh Sarai-I in South Delhi are worried due to the area’s deteriorated infrastructure. Even though they are paying tax regularly, the authorities have turned a blind eye to the residents woes.

The bitumen layer has eroded and the potholes have gone much deeper and wider. Despite many complaints, the authorities have not taken any action against the issues. A project to dense-carpet the internal roads have been sanctioned last year, but the work is yet to begin.

Pushpa Dass Sota, the president of Triveni apartments Welfare Association (TAWA) has approached the deputy commissioner of South Zone and other senior officials many times but in vain. However, finally the RWA and the residents had to fix the issue.

Many other areas in Delhi are having the same issues. For years, the corporation cited fund shortage as the reason. Multiplicity of agencies involved in road-cutting for various projects and Delhi Jal Board’s leaking pipelines and poor drainage system as prime reasons for the bad roads. Now, three civic bodies and Delhi government’s PWD section has started working on 60-foot wider roads, but still they are blaming each other for the condition.

People are now hoping that with the assembly elections just around the corner, in order to bag votes, there will be a roadmaking spree in the last few months. This year the BJP-led corporations have allotted an additional Rs 1 crore to each of the 272 wards. However, Rs 50 lakh is allotted for repair and maintenance of roads.

The cash-strapped North Corporation could spend only Rs 34.50 crore on strengthening of roads out of Rs 120 crore given by Delhi government. Since its inception, just 16 new road projects have been sanctioned.

The East Corporation officials says that road projects worth Rs. 390 crore have been implemented. SS Yadav, Commissioner, East Corporation has said that they are working on more than 12 road projects and maintenance work. Other agencies like Yamuna Vikas Board and JNNURM are also working on the same projects.
