Owners of multi-storeyed buildings will be fined if they are caught throwing waste on the street.
The KMC Act stated that the Kolkata Municipal Corporation can set a fine as high as Rs 5,000 for littering streets, but however, the amount can differ from person to person.
Debabrata Majumder, MMiC, solid waste department, said that the civic body is going to launch an awareness campaign before imposing fines and in this awareness program, Garbage Free India, an association formed by former Kolkatans will assist the civic team.
They have already drawn up some 10-point intention using that they can approach KMC. It includes attention about littering, health and setting, location penalties regarding littering, spitting along with urinating around the tracks, a ‘Clean Up Now‘ campaign, waste management and modernisation of garbage dumps. It plans to begin with an advertising campaign and then follow it up with a bonus system.
Rubayat Kadir, a member of Garbage Free India said, that the Kolkatans never bothered to keep the Kolkata city clean and it was always been a dirty city. Moreover the city needs funds and technology to clean up, he added.
