Residents to hire private agencies for waste disposal
Despite the Defence Colony residents sincerely segregating dry and wet waste, the unconcerned Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) pourakarmikas are mixing up the waste collected from them.
Distressed residents are now planning on a systematic disposal of waste through private agencies.
The untrained garbage collectors have been messing up the segregated wastes in the garbage trolleys, which is a waste of all the efforts of residents and the authorities. The workers who collect waste need to be trained on garbage collection in an efficient way, said Akshay Mallappa, Secretary of the Defence Colony Residents’ Welfare Association (DECORA).
Over a month ago, the residents of Defence Colony were given training on waste segregation and were told to give the garden waste separately which can be used in compost-making. Even though the workers’ inefficiency was brought to the notice of the corporators and the BBMP engineers, they took no action, alleged DECORA president Col Raj Mannar.
The contractors too seem to be least bothered and this has forced the residents to go in search of private firms for collecting waste. Some of the residents are disappointed since BBMP is being careless. The residents have planned to hire few garbage collectors through the help of an NGO for collecting dry waste, said a resident.
When enquired about this, the Corporator of the area, Savitha Ramesh told that an awareness programme was conducted on waste segregation for the pourakarmikas. And such programmes have been planned in all the wards.
