Rising property leading to family disputes
Kozhikode- With the boom in real estate business, there has been an increased number of property disputes in Kozhikode. Out of the total cases, about 50 percent of the cases were regarding property disputes among families.
According to a commission, there were about 86 property dispute cases during an adalat session. The key reasons for the increased property disputes are, boom in realty sector business and huge land value. Likewise, a mother filed a petition against her son demanding for the possession of an old table. As per the commission, both the petitioner and the respondent are unwilling to compromise.
Although the law clearly states that every child should obligatorily look after his/her parents once he/she inherits the parent’s property and wealth, any related violation of this law will cause imprisonment. However, a large number of parents are being abandoned these days.
There are many siblings who are involved in property disputes by holding their parents as weapons in order to take over the property in custody. In another case witnessed by the commission, a sibling had filed a petition against another sibling by collecting a thumb impression of his bed-ridden mother. Such cases among siblings are also on the rise.
However, property disputes between husband and wife have declined. Perhaps, the lack of education is no more a reason for family breakage as there have been highly educated couples approaching the court for property separation.
