‘Road’ sector will likely be focused by Modi govt soon after assuming office

One of the first sectors which will apparently be the prime focus of the Narendra Modi-led government right at the outset will be the ‘road’ sector.

Plans for Rs 12,000-13,000 crore projects have already been readied by the Ministry of Transport and Highways. According to a Ministry official, these projects – which also include the Rs 6,500-crore Delhi-Meerut expressway project to be undertaken with private investment – have also received the approval of the Public-Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC), and are waiting for the final go-ahead from the Cabinet.

The official also revealed that in the case of some of the projects, technical bids have been called; though no further decision has been taken because the Cabinet’s nod is still awaited. Proposals for clearance will be sent for the projects as soon as the new Government takes charge at the Centre.

The projects which have been readied by the Ministry include projects pertaining to the expansion of roads into two- and four-lane roads; as well as the extension of these roads across a number of states, including Odisha, Kerala, Punjab, UP, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh. Moreover, the Delhi-Meerut expressway project is being bid out under the ‘build-operate-transfer’ (BOT) model.

Noting that these projects will receive instant action from the new Government, the Ministry official said: “The work on these projects has been completed from our side and we are to call for bids once the final nod comes.”
