The progress of the six-laning project of the Panipat-Jalandhar National Highway was reviewed by the Krishan Pal Gurjar – Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping – on Wednesday.

While reviewing the Panipat-Jalandhar NH project, Gurjar told the officials of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) that the project should be completed within the scheduled completion timeline – that is, March 2015 – because it has become a hazard to the people travelling on the road.

  • The work on the project involving the six-laning of the Panipat-Jalandhar NH was started in May 2009. The project will include the construction of 71 flyovers, 8 railways overbridges, 5 viaducts, 44 underpasses, and 58 pedestrian underpasses.
  • The project – for which the concessionaire is Soma company – was scheduled to be completed by November 2011; but, due to delays, the completion deadline was extended to March 2012. However, uncertainty still surrounds the project; with the deadline for completion now having been extended to March 2015.

Gurjar’s instructions to the NHAI officials to complete the six-laning of the Panipat-Jalandhar NH by the new deadline comes in the wake of the fact that, two months back, the Supreme Court had asked Soma company to complete the project within one year. However, the company has not yet begun the construction on the highway to ensure that the project is completed in time.
