Roads in the city of Chennai to meet reconstruction
Almost all roads in the city, including arterial stretches such as Poonamallee High Road and bus route roads in areas like Nungambakkam and Kodambakkam, could be re-laid with concrete in two years if things go according to the corporation’s plan.
The mayor and a team of engineers will meet on Tuesday to discuss the project that will involve replacing black-topped roads with concrete over a total of 441km and is expected to cost around 1,600 crore.
A corporation official said lying a road with concrete would cost three times as much as a black-topped road but it would last many years and a tar road would have to be re-laid many times during the period.
However the construction work should start of because the roads are in bad shape and this often leads to accidents and other problems. Badly shaped roads also lead to traffic issues. The governments in this region should think of an immediate plan as whether concrete the road or any other remedy. The corporation in this region would be looking into the matter and do as needed.
