SEZs are coming out as a major exporting hub
The government has assigned the think-tank ICRIER to check again and evaluate the special economic zone policy as informed in the Parliament last day. The findings in the report would be then analysed once again when the final report is submitted. This was stated in the written reply by Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to the Rajya Sabha.
The government has assigned to Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) to do a study on revisiting SEZs. She further stated that the government has approved around 565 SEZ proposals out of which only 388 zones have been notified and only 185 of them are exporting. The SEZ’s has been coming up fast, and is being expected to boost the economic scenario.
SEZ has emerged as a major exporting hub and investment hub has started losing the sheen after the imposition of minimum alternate tax and dividend distribution tax in 2011. Replying to another question on SEZ she stated that the Board of Approval for SEZs have granted more time to as many as 109 developers during the April 2012 and June 2014 phase to execute their projects
