Shiv Sena proposes to reclaim land from Mumbai Port Trust

No Comments Sub Category:Mumbai,Realty News Posted On: Jun 26, 2014

Last week, the Shiv Sena put forth a plan for the transformation of the eastern shore of Mumbai into a modern expanse of land, by reclaiming land from the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT).

According to the plan proposed by Shiv Sena, the move to transform Mumbai’s eastern shore will involve the development of 1,860 acres of water-facing land — from South Mumbai’s Sassoon Dock to Wadala Estate, which is at a distance of 15 kms.

The initial transformation plan has been put together by Pankaj Joshi, Executive Director of Urban Design Research Institute. Joshi claims that 55 percent of the MbPT land has not been put to optimal use.

The developments envisioned in Joshi’s plan include a makeover of residential complexes in the 15-km stretch, as well as the creation of earmarked leisure and business zones, specialised eco-tourism and heritage tourism zones, and water transport facilities.

However, for the materialization of the plan, Shiv Sena will have to reclaim some of the land from the MbPT, which owns majority of the land on Mumbai’s eastern shore.

As such, noting that the plan is currently only an idea, Shiv Sena Supremo Uddhav Thackarey said at a recent meeting that the plan will be taken this up with Infrastructure Minister Nitin Gadkari, and also with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Thackarey also added: “If every Mumbaikar supports the proposal, then we can accomplish it.”
