Skyrocketing realty prices reduce government offices’ space
The office space of government departments have started reducing because of increase in prices of real estate. In an austerity drive, the central government has ordered to minimize the area of office accommodation.
Govt on Austerity drive
An order given to government offices by the Ministry of Urban Development a few days ago calls for a 10 per cent reduce in space where the claim for space is up to 30,000 sq ft and a 15 per cent reduce where the claim is more than 30,000 sq ft.
The government departments say that the rule for additional space is fixed to 10 percent of total requirement of the office. For further expansion, special approval is required from integrated financial advisers. The permitted space for personal offices for officers and the suggested work space for staff should also be reorganized. An officer getting pay scale of Rs 10,000 per month and above are allotted 360 sq ft, whereas ministerial staff, clerks, etc have 40 sq ft space. Rules for space allocation are already issued and conference rooms, waiting rooms, women’s room, canteen, library and record rooms are constructed according to that rule.
