Slowdown of garbage trucks heaps up backlog

1 Comment Sub Category:Bangalore,Civic Issues,Green Living,Maintenance Posted On: Nov 21, 2012

Bangalore- As the movement of garbage-laden trucks to various landfills had slowed down in Bangalore on Monday, collection of waste was interrupted.

Around 360 trucks had lifted 3,800 tonnes of garbage in the city on Sunday, but most of them failed to reach the landfills till Monday afternoon due to issues like narrow roads, a queue system and restricted timings.

The trucks were moving towards landfills in Mandur, Terra Firma, Bingipura and Dodda Nagamangala. They had to park on the roadsides and wait for earlier ones to return, before they could move on.

Only 50% of trucks that leave the city on any day can reach the landfills, unload waste and return in time for waste collection the next day, supposed the truck drivers. Also they have to await orders from contractors and engineers before moving to the landfill.

Moreover, the slowdown of garbage trucks has been resulting in an increasing backlog of garbage across the city. BBMP officials acknowledged that the backlog of garbage is creating a muddle in the city.
