Software goof up halts GHB allotments in Ahmedabad
Many had smelled a rat over the allotment of homes built by Gujarat Housing Board (GHB) in Ahmedabad. A controversy plagued the entire procedure and a detailed report has been sought from Gujarat Infomatics Limited (GIL) which had allotted these flats via a computerised draw. It is perceived by many that there is an error in the algorithm of the software used for the draw.
For the next 3 days all the allotments have been stopped and till the report is submitted by GIL and is scrutinised by GHB. Applicants alleged that the software only processed applications that were filed online.
A senior GHB official explained that applications were invited online and in the physical form. According to preliminary observations by the GHB officials, the software processed all online applications but for physical applications, it processed only applications in the reserved category — for SC, ST and OBCs. Those in the general category seem to be left out.
Not only these issues plagued the allotment, another issue of family members chosen for the allotments also jeopardised the entire process. Mostly all the adults in a family submit these forms so that their chances of getting at least one flat increases and this practice is prevalent since time immemorial. Now the issue has cropped up because the consecutive form numbers of applicants of the same family were chosen by the software. Hence some families have more than one flat allotted to them and some have none. There were 30 instances like this reported and the entire process happened due to the lack of testing of the software used in this program.
