SRA slum projects not generating demand in Nagpur
Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), Nagpur, is forced to scrap many schemes designed to offer for slum-dwellers.
The reason being lack of demand as most of the target population has not shown any interest so far in most of the projects.
The major problem seems to be the size of flats being built under SRA, which differs from the preference of slum dwellers.
A SRA official disclosed that it had decided to construct 9,829 dwelling units in the first project. However, the number had to be reduced to almost 70% to 2,966 due to lack of demand.
The official further said that the authority is banking on projects to construct another 6,357 units on public private partnership (PPP) mode.
The razing of Rajnagar slum can also prove to be controversial as the present settlers are encroaching on government land and some public representatives may mislead the slum-dwellers when the government tries to evict them as it had happened in the past.
