State Government, NHAI served two-week notice to file affidavits

The state government and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) fell under the scanner, as the Kerala High Court today served them an ultimatum of two weeks to provide sufficient reasons for delay in the development of the Kollam-Thiruvananthapuram and Alapuzha-Haripad national highways.

Acting on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by one Suresh Babu, the bench comprising Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice P R Ramachandra Menon served this directive, in order to seek direction regarding the 45-metre widening of the national highway.

Land for the widening had been acquired long ago, said the bench. However, it had not been completed so far, due to disputes over land acquisition. Affidavits filed by the state government and NHAI illustrate a lack of agreement between the authorities on the construction of national highways. The court maintained that the delay would lead to a loss in the public exchequer, and ordered the authorities to file their affidavits within two weeks.
