Stop Illegal Constructions in the Cities
Illegal urban housing is not only limited to slum dwellings, many high end apartment complexes too come under that ambit. The residents of the Campa Cola compound in Mumbai had staged agitations and had not allowed the demolitions a couple of times finally had to give way to the Supreme Court verdict. The Supreme Court ordered the demolition of illegally constructed flats and hundreds of citizens became homeless after the demolition.
The problem is the disparity of the quality of life between villages and cities is so high in India, that the villagers constantly want to throng towards the city. However, cities, especially the metros, are grossly ill equipped to host the influx. Mumbai alone has more than 20, 000 migrants entering the city every day.
The policymakers and enforcement agencies are the prime culprits both by acts of commission and omission. The migrants have very less choice and they often have to pay a much higher price, along with time delays and substantial transaction costs. The real estate agents often charge exorbitant amount to obtain formal housing. The irony is that often these unauthorized housing societies would not have any sewerage or piped supply of potable water. However the migrants have a little choice and often take up such units as even the availability of such basic amenities in the authorized colonies is not any better.
