Strife over Vizag metro
As the Vizag metro rail project gathers steam, most of the environmentalists in the city consider the upcoming project to be a bane rather than a boon. Though a few feel it would emerge as the best mode of eco-friendly future transport that would cut vehicular pollution by bringing down the number of vehicles on the road, a majority of them are of the opinion that it is not only unnecessary but will also be detrimental to the environment, besides aggravating the already existing power woes of agriculture and industries.
They point out that when there are other important civic works and projects awaiting completion, there’s no point wasting money and energy on the Rs 5,000 crore metro rail projects. J V Ratnam, founder of NGO Green Climate said for a city like Vizag, with a population of around 20 lakh, the metro rail is not a mandatory requirement.
According to the city residents the metro sources will also be depleting the natural resources of the place which is a very important part of the city.
