Strike by BBMP pourakarmikas caves in good results
Bangalore- The contract pourakarmikas of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), who went on a rally came to a quick halt followed by a high-level meeting of two pourakarmika unions with the officials from the Labour Department and BBMP.
The contract pourakarmikas, feared of job layoffs, since new garbage contractor will be taking charge from December 1, went on the strike. They demanded the BBMP that all 17,000 pourakarmikas have to be retained even after the new contract comes into effect.
The Secretary of Labour Department, Labour Commissioner and Joint Commissioner, BBMP Commissioner and Mayor attended the meeting. Pourakarmika representatives including Mysore Narayan, President of Karnataka State Municipal Pourakarmika Mahasangha, and S. Balan, Union president of BBMP Contract Pourakarmikas’ Union were also present in the meeting.
The meeting, which was held in the Vikasa Soudha, discussed various issues including benefits, holidays and compensation in the event of an accident. As per section 12 (3) of the Industrial Disputes Act 1947, an agreement will be signed by all the contractors with the unions. And BBMP will be the witness in the agreement, said Mr. Balan.
A revised minimum wage of Rs. 6,936 will be paid to each contract pourakarmika and the salary will be disbursed by the 7th of every month.
In the event of any accident, as per the Workmen’s Compensation Act 1923, Rs. 2 lakh will be given to the pourakarmikas’s family as insurance.
The pourakarmikas did not get any holidays till now. But hereafter, they will be entitled with 10 national holidays a year, besides one day’s leave for every 20 days of work.
The pourakarmikas will get Rs. 20 a day as food allowance. Women pourakarmikas will get two saris a year, blouse, tailoring charge and washing allowance.
