Sudden Demolition Drive by BDA Bangalore leaves Owners Shattered

1 Comment Sub Category:Legal,Realty News Posted On: Aug 02, 2011

BDA identified 51 unauthorized constructions in the Vishwabharati Housing Co-operative Society in Hosakerehalli 80 Feet Road and started demolition of illegal buildings at 6am. Among them, nine property owners had obtained a court stay order. BDA launched a sudden demolition drive leaving many helpless owners in deep despair.

Over 150 policemen were deployed to maintain law and order as 12 earthmovers smashed three-storeyed and four-storeyed buildings. Owners who saw their houses bulldozed said the developer had given them sites which should have been given to BDA for relinquishment. They started protesting and police rushed in to prevent traders and shopkeepers from creating trouble.

“We have living here for the past 50 years. How can it be called illegal now? We haven`t got any notice from BDA. Our family has given land for this layout. Now our building has been demolished. The society should be accountable. But the office-bearers are not taking our calls,” said Geetha Shankar.

Tears rolled down the face of Karihanumaiah D as he saw his three-storey building brought down. “Three shops and eight houses of my family have been razed within 2-3 hours. I got no notice from BDA to get a stay order. We were given these sites from the layout owner when layout was formed. For 1 acre, two sites were allotted to farmers.

Property owners, who were farmers earlier and had parted with their land for layout formation, lost their properties on Monday all because the developer allegedly kept the BDA in the dark. How the layout was formed is a mystery.

BDA has not touched the buildings in the layout, but only those facing the main road. BDA said the developer had not given away space for relinquishment to BDA and that`s a violation. Also, there are no civic amenity sites. This is one of 108 unauthorized layouts identified by BDA.
