Surat faces severe labour shortage

The real estate sector in the diamond city of Surat is experiencing a severe shortage of labourers.

Strict implementation of police notification on construction workers has led to fleeing of building contractors.

The drive started by police to collect photographs and other details in Katargam, Varachha, Puna, Dabholi, Sachin and Udhna has created panic among the illiterate construction workers, who have started to flee the city.

The police state that the drive was started to collect information on labourers and workers in textile, real estate, diamond, private and public sector industries etc. The notification has been issued to keep a detailed data of migrant and local workers in view of terrorist threat.

The developers while lauding the police initiative, state that it is difficult for us to spread awareness among the illiterate labourers and the fleeing of labourers only add woes to already existing shortage of labourers.
