The Bombay High Court has directed the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to take appropriate steps to implement recommendations of National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI)  regarding the removal of health hazards caused by garbage dumping at a ground in Turbhe in Navi Mumbai.

NEERI was appointed by the court to visit the site and suggest ways and measures to remove health hazards allegedly caused due to dumping of approximately 700 tonnes of garbage every day on the ground.

As ordered a NEERI committee has visited the site and submitted report suggesting ways such as planting trees and creating buffer zone between the ground and residential areas.

Due to garbage dumping, the authorities were compromising on the health safety of people, as 70,000 huts were located near the ground. In the wake of the petition, Supreme Court had laid down guidelines which says that a buffer area of 500 metres was to maintained from the ground where the workers were dumping garbage.

However, the guidelines were not followed in Turbhe, alleged Vasant Mhatre, a social worker.
