Technology Driven Smart cities to become reality soon
Post-independence the growth has been tremendous in India, however the reach of technology was limited only to the urban areas. The IT generation which has travelled to the US, UK, Europe and other advanced countries always swore by the infrastructure development of those countries. Indian cities were far away from those dreams like completely Wi-Fi enabled cities, smart cards for cashless transactions, self-transactions and un assisted exits in super markets, (no involvement of human beings during the entire shopping experience), facial recognition used by smart cards for permitting access to apartments, unmanned apartment blocks with advanced security systems etc.
These sound like fairy tales, however these features are likely to become a reality in India in less than a decade, as the smart city concept starts to take shape. In this concept the same smart card will allow us to operate the electrical equipment at home through motion sensor technology and save 30 % on electricity and water costs.
A smart city is the one that completely runs on technology—be it for electricity, water, sanitation and recycling, ensuring 24/7 water supply, traffic and transport systems. These technologies have enough provisions for back up so that failure in one server does not bring everything to standstill. Data analytics is used to provide efficient solutions and data crunching helps the authorities and providers to understand the consumer pattern.
Commuting is lessened, transport and infrastructure is improved and automated building security and surveillance systems which require minimal human intervention is installed in these smart cities. As a result of all these, the efficiency is increased and today the time and energy which is wasted in commuting, waiting in the traffic jams etc. is eliminated ensuring a better quality of life.
