Telecom infrastructure mandatory for future real estate ventures: DoT

No Comments Sub Category:Infrastructure,Realty News Posted On: Jul 16, 2014

According to an internal note of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the government plans to make creation of telecom infrastructure mandatory for future real estate ventures, including high rises. DoT is likely to shortly specify the real estate project categories where it may purely be the property developer’s responsibility to arrange the basic telecom infrastructure, including broadband connectivity.
The note also clarifies that a common infrastructure that will include a mandatory provision of telecom infrastructure for all new real estate developments and in buildings needs to be created by all the developers. DoT will unveil an enabling policy for this very soon. These changes will be done in the commercial and residential ventures alike.
Lalit Kumar Jain the chairman of CREDAI(Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India) the industry lobby representing India’s leading property developers also commented on this move by DoT. Jain stated that there is no resistance as of now to providing a (telecom) backbone connecting all apartments in a project. However if there are new guidelines which will be released soon, then there should be a provision of telecom service providers sharing costs with the builders.
According to Jain, many builders already provide telecom backbones in the form of optic fibre networks linking multiple apartments. In such a situation, multiple telecom service providers pay the builder a charge to use it. However this move will benefit the home owners as they will get a hi-fi dwelling which has better broadband and internet connectivity.
