A vast majority of Indian population still lives in villages but the average village life in India is considered to be poor and without access to basic facilities. While Indian cities are thriving to become at par with modern international cities, villages have been lagging behind in progress. But not every village is waiting for the government to provide it with basic facilities and amenities. Here is a list of 10 Indian villages that have changed the quality of life in their village without any involvement of any government agency or support.
- Mawlynnong – Asia’s cleanest village: Mawlynnong is a small village in Meghalaya which is unlike any other village in Asia. Located at about 90 kms from Shillong, Mawlynnong holds the distinction of being the cleanest village not only in India but in the entire Asian continent. The village was awarded the ‘Cleanest Village in Asia award by Discover India Magazine in 2003.
- Punsari – Epitome of Smart Village: Punsari village located in Gujarat is a shining example of a smart village offering Wi0Fi, CCTVs and Air conditioned classrooms in schools. The village also has a mini bus commute system all of which has been developed by the local village council.
- Hiware Bazar- Home to Millionaires: Hiware Bazar is a small village located in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. The village has the distinction of being home to more than 60 millionaires. With no person living below the poverty line. The villagers reached their monetary success after they embraced rain water harvesting and milch cattle breeding instead of traditional methods of farming.
- Dharnai -100% Solar Power Village: Dharnai, a village located in Bihar is India’s first fully solar powered village changing the lives of its residents forever. Dharnai solar power project was worked out by village council in association with Greenpeace.
- Chappar- Honoring the Girl Child: Notorious for having a low male to female child ratio, Chappar, a village in Haryana has increased its girl child ratio offering awareness and sweets to the entire village when a girl child is born.
- Korkrebellur- Nature Lovers Delight: Korkrebellur is a small village in Karnataka famous for offering dwelling space for birds so much so that the village has a dedicated space for wounded birds to rest and heal.
- Ballia- Bypassing Arsenic Poisoned Water: Ballia, a small village in Uttar Pradesh has bypassed the ground water poisoning problem by using traditional wells instead of hand pumps which offered arsenic contaminated water to the residents.
- Pothanikkad-100% Literate Village: Pothanikkad village in Kerala is the first village in India with a 100% literacy rate. The village has over 17563 residents well versed in reading and writing.
- Bekkinakeri- Innovative Idea to Beat open defecation: Bekkinakeri village in Karnataka has managed to stop open defecation by ‘greeting’ lota-bearers with a good morning message enabling a total wipe out of any open defecation by the villagers.
- Shani Shingnapur- the Village with no Doors: Shani Shingnapur, located in Maharashtra is the only village in the world with no doors as there are no thefts in the village. The village is dedicated to Lord Shani or Saturn and is one of the safest villages in the world.
