Toll policy unveiled by Maharashtra
The Maharashtra government plans to close down around 22 toll collection booths, in addition to about 65 which had already been shut. Roads constructed with expenditure below Rs 10 crore are expected to be toll free soon.
The move is an attempt to escalation of confrontation with opposition parties, especially the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). The policy is likely to be to be announced within a couple of weeks.
An audit of disputed toll roads is being actively considered by the government, Chavan said. He informed that demolition of booths would be carried on such roads where the toll collection was completed.
Thackeray had called off his party’s rasta roko agitation on Wednesday after the meeting. He asked party workers and public not to pay toll till the new toll policy is released by the government. He postponed the party’s agitation to February 21 in view of the government’s assurance on new toll policy.
