The government will consider if the toll rates will be reduced for only vehicles bearing Haryana registration numbers or the relief should be extended to all vehicles which pass through the toll plazas. The Haryana cabinet is likely to take a decision on reducing toll tax in the state.

The government was planning to give the relief to owners of vehicles registered in Haryana initially. Some in the government said that such a move may displease Haryanvis owning vehicles registered in other states meanwhile.

Now, it’s unlikely to increase the VAT on petrol. Initially, the government had proposed to hike the value added tax (VAT) on petrol to compensate the revenue losses caused by toll tax reduction. The government may also give more relief to vehicles of those who reside in the vicinity of the toll plazas.

At present, the state charges 21% VAT on petrol, which is the lowest among the adjoining states. In this regard, Pawan Bansal, director of Citizens For Responsibility, Accountability and Transparency, sent a memorandum to the Election Commission seeking its intervention in the matter.Meanwhile, a group of civil society activists has urged the EC to restrain the Haryana cabinet from taking any policy decision in its meeting scheduled keeping in view the re-polling in eight polling stations of Gurgaon parliamentary constituency.
