Traffic congestion likely to reduce at Okalipuram, Bangalore
Bangalore- An eight-lane, signal-free corridor is coming up at Okalipuram, which is one of the oldest areas of the city. The new corridor is expected to bring down the traffic congestion in prime areas in Bangalore West such as Rajaji Nagar, Basaveshwara Nagar, Vijayanagar and Nagarabhavi.
The project includes building loops, underpass and road under bridges between Okalipuram Junction and Fountain Circle.
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has bought 3.1 acres of land from Binny Mill for Rs 58.8 crore. The BBMP has estimated the total cost of the project to be Rs 183.77 crore, including expenditure for shifting of utilities. The corridor is expected to be developed within 18 to 20 months. BBMP has given the contract to Simplex Infrastructure.
Since Okalipuram is located close to Kempegowda Bus Station and the City Railway Station, which are the prime travel points of the city, the area witnesses numerous traffic issues regularly.
At present the nine-metre wide road at Okalipuram-Platform Road Junction and Fountain Circle sees around 14,000 PCUs (passenger car units per hour) during peak hours and over 8,000 during non-peak hours. This has been leading to frequent traffic jams, commuting delay, accidents and traffic congestion.
To make space for the corridor development, many departments such as the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom), the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) and the South Western Railway (SWR) have been shifting their utilities.
