Unorganised sector of construction labourers to get registered soon- Chief Justice Orders
A total of 5,44,870 buildings and construction workers have been registered in the recent past. This data is up to May 31, 2014 and under the Building and Other Construction Workers Act, 1996 registration process is a mandatory process of all the construction companies.
A division bench headed by Chief Justice D H Waghela has posted a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to the second week of July to monitor the progress of the registration. The construction workers were given identity cards and the court wants to monitor this entire process closely. During the hearing, counsel for Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI) told the court that the labour department should involve all the stakeholders in this initiative. It is not only the responsibility of the developers to ensure that the registration of the construction workers happen smoothly, the government and the local agencies too should play an active part in the registration process.
Each registered construction worker will be issued a registration smart card with a normal validity of three years. If this is connected with the public health scheme then the labourers will get proper treatment in the government hospitals. Also most of the construction labourers are migrants and in the event of any crime, it is very difficult to trace the suspect. This scheme will help the police force too. It will be mandatory for a construction worker to produce his/her registration card when entering a construction site.
