Urban renewal scheme to revive 100 cities along the banks of Ganges
The prominent cities and towns along the Ganges will get a new lease of life. The ministry of urban development is focusing on the renewal scheme and is busy preparing a blueprint for the same. UPA’s Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) will be over written by this new scheme. Rs 1.75 lakh crore is expected to be spent over a period of 10 years in these projects.
In collaboration with the tourism and Ganga rejuvenation ministry, and various other ministries, an integrated plan will be developed by the centre, which will ensure a better co-ordination and seamless completion of the project in a record time. Around 100 cities including Agra and Varanasi (NaMo’s victory seat) are expected to be taken up for renewal in the fresh plan and converted into world-class tourism circuits.
A senior Urban Development ministry official mentioned that the new urban renewal scheme will be one of the most ambitious schemes of the NDA government. The tourism and the river development ministries will be kept in the loop while designing this renewal program, as it cannot be run in isolation. 15,000 intercity and feeder buses will be procured using the funds given by the centre to the state government. This will give a push to the commercial automobile industry too.
