UT admin plans to audit residential projects in Chandigarh
Chandigarh: The UT administration is planning to perform structural auditing of private residential structures on a move to ensure the safety of housing units in the city.
In this regard, a survey was carried out, according to which there is a large stock of non-engineered buildings in Chandigarh which have been developed without following the building norms.
Geographically, Chandigarh falls in the high risk prone seismic zone IV in which special measures are required to be followed to safeguard buildings to be earthquake-resistant. Hence, an audit like this is very much necessary in the city.
Due to high density development, unsafe buildings which share common walls can even endanger lives and properties of neighbouring buildings. There are many structures in the city that were initially designed or allotted as single storeyed structures but have been later developed with additional floors without following structural safety norms and provisions. The survey highlights that such housing structures need to be audited importantly.
Along with the areas where structurally unsafe buildings pose a threat to life and property, there are other issues too which are identified by the UT government. The issues include specific problems such as less space between buildings, walls without plaster and staircases resting on cantilever slabs.
Several houses in Chandigarh have been identified by the officials which need immediate structural auditing. These units include low-cost houses in various sectors like 15, 19, 20, 24 and 32, housing schemes in Sector 25, houses in Sector 29 and housing stock in Manimajra.
