UT Administration requests for measures to save the Sukhna Lake

No Comments Sub Category:Realty News Posted On: Aug 14, 2014

The Chandigarh Administration has written to the Union Government and the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) regarding a few issues regarding wild life conservation. They have demanded that the construction adjoining the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary, especially in the area north of the Capitol Complex, needs to be regulated.

The UT has demanded that the ministry should fix an upper cap on the height of the buildings, as the tall buildings affect the wild life negatively. They have requested the cap to be at three storeys, in these areas. The letter states that Punjab has plans to settle a high-density population in the Nayagaon Nagar Panchayat, adjoining the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary.

The height and coverage area needs to be regulated for the construction of buildings in that area. As per today according to the approved master plan of the Nayagaon Nagar Panchayat, there is no restriction on the height of buildings. This has adversely affected the Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary.

The letter also has requested the Union Government to look into the matter and has urged that the density of the buildings needs to be regulated at least in a 1 km area from the boundary of the sanctuary. The UT requested that the entire Kansal area fell in the catchment area of Sukhna Lake, which needed to be protected for the protection and conservation of the lake.
