Wal-Mart to go for smaller stores in India
Wal-Mart, world’s largest retailer, is likely to change its global strategy in Indian retail sector.
WAl-Mart is of the opinion that concept of hypermarkets spread across a huge space may not work in India. It may go for smaller stores in India to cater to needs of consumers.
The strategic shift is centered around unwillingness of Indian consumers to travel to far-flung areas for shopping. As the retailer will have to set up stores within a city, it may not get hold of huge spaces as they may not be available or come at huge costs.
Wal-Mart has a toehold in India through its joint venture with Bharti that runs 17 cash-and-carry stores. Experts say Wal-Mart will take a cue from Easyday stores run by Bharti and open stores in different formats across the country.
