Water level drops at TG Halli: BWSSB discontinues supply
Bangalore- Owing to depleting water level in the Tippagondanahalli Reservoir (TGR), the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has discontinued water supply to the city from the reservoir from past three weeks.
Lack of rainfall has led to low water level following which came the decision of stopping water supply. Recently, the water level dropped to 2,500 feet as against the threshold of 2,506 feet.
The water supply was reduced to 28 million litres of water per day (mld) whereas the average supply is 130 mld. The last drawal made was merely 12 mld, as per the records.
For the first time the drawal from TGR was discontinued in 1985 which was resumed quickly. Since Cauvery IV stage I phase was commissioned, in 2002, water supply from the TGR was discontinued for nearly an year. And after six years the supply has now been interrupted.
Presently, the water supply to the residents of Rajajinagar and surrounding localities has been given from the newly commissioned Cauvery IV stage II phase.
BWSSB officials suppose that the TGR supply may be resumed during monsoon next year. The Cauvery project- at Thorekadanahalli (TK Halli), Harohalli and Tataguni require three stages of pumping. But TGR requires only two stages of pumping, which makes it cost effective.
Inconsistent rainfall, intensive groundwater irrigation, change of land usage and blocking of secondary and tertiary valleys are the major reasons for water depletion at the reservoir. TGR being choked up as it is left uncleaned for many years is also a reason.
