Water supply is disconnected for property tax defaulters

Property tax defaulterThe Ooty municipal officials have disconnected water supply to at least six of the government buildings in Ooty town. This step has taken as those properties were failed to clear the property tax in stipulated time.

The municipality has short-listed at least 18 government properties for which property tax has not yet been paid. Many domestic buildings have also been identified by the municipality as defaulters. In some cases, the tax has not been paid for more than a decade.

The buildings, where the water connection was disconnected, include two central government premises namely, BSNL office and Microwave office, which has property tax dues of Rs 43 lakh and Rs 5.85 lakh respectively.

The other government buildings include the cooperative government press, BDO office and the Khadhi and Village board.

The drive to disconnect water supply to the remaining government buildings that have defaulted will continue from Monday onwards. Water supply will be discontinued to the domestic defaulters too.

If the defaulters fail to pay tax dues, the properties will be auctioned according to the latest guideline value, as per the municipal act, told by a municipal officer.
