WDRA Chairman: Cost of land is biggest constraint for warehousing sector
During the course of an Assocham event held in New Delhi on Wednesday, Warehousing Development and Regulatory Authority (WDRA) Chairman Dinesh Rai said that the cost of land is one of the main constraints for the warehousing sector in India.
Asserting that other logistic costs are also significant for India’s unorganized warehousing sector, Rai said it is pertinent that licensing policy should be simplified by the states. He also added that the warehousing sector will also get a much desired push from the passage of goods and services tax (GST).
Drawing attention to the fact that there is lack of trained manpower in the warehousing sector, Rai said that educational institutions should try to offer good training programmes in logistics as well as warehousing. Such a move will not only solve the problem of trained manpower in the warehousing sector, but will also enable the country’s youth to contribute to the sector.
Furthermore, asserting the importance of use of modern technologies in the warehousing sector, Rai said that the sector requires “scientific storage facilities, better logistics and handling.”
Rai emphasized that “more scientific warehouses are required” in India, and said: “Warehouses have become a key part of the supply-chain management as growth of organised retail is driving logistics and warehousing infrastructure for quality space.”
