West Bengal SEZs generated Rs 15,000-cr export income in FY 2013-14
According to a recent statement made by Sanjeev Nandwani, Development Commissioner, SEZs (Eastern and North Eastern Zone), a total export income of Rs 15,000 crore was generated by the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in West Bengal in FY 2013-14.
The disclosure was made by Nandwani on the sidelines of a recent National IT Conclave organised by the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT).
Going by the details shared by Nandwani about the export income generated by West Bengal SEZs in FY 2013-14, the contribution of the gems and jewellery segment was a whopping Rs 9,000 crore; while the manufacturing SEZ at Falta contributed Rs 1,800 crore; and IT contributed approximately Rs 4,200 crore.
There are currently seven SEZs operational in West Bengal. Five out of these seven SEZs are IT-SEZs, including Wipro, Unitech, Bantala Leather Complex, DLF, and Tata Consultancy Services. The remaining two operational SEZs are non-IT SEZs. These are Manikanchan (gems and jewellery) and Falta (manufacturing).
In reference to the contribution of West Bengal SEZs to FY 2013-14 export income, Nandwani said: “Exports from SEZs in Odisha and West Bengal stood at Rs 16,000 crore last fiscal. All India exports from SEZs stood at Rs 4,94,000 crore during the same period.”
