Wipro plans to set up SEZ in Visakhapatnam
Wipro Technologies, an IT giant, is planning to set up a special economic zone (SEZ) software development facility in Visakhapatnam. It is planned to be a seven-storied 1,000 employees facility. Currently, the company has a seven acre campus that is located on NH-16 opposite the Tech Mahindra facility at Satyam Junction. It houses 300 employees and caters to the domestic market.
The company has sought the approval of the AP Information Technology and Communications (IT&C) department as well as Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC).
A senior official informed that land acquisition is a problem in the city; hence the norms have been relaxed. IT SEZs don’t need to adhere to the land requirement. Earlier, the law required that one needs 10 hectares for IT and 100 hectares for sector-specific SEZs. Instead, the requirement in terms of built up area is — For tier-1 cities it is 1 lakh square metres, whereas for tier-2 cities it is 50,000 square metres (over 5 lakh sq ft) and 25,000 square metres for tier-3 cities.
