Wipro to hire 7,000 people for its Vizag SEZ over next 5 years

IT bigwig Wipro has revealed in a Sunday statement that, in the next five-year period, the company will hire 7,000 people for its SEZ (special economic zone) facility at Visakhapatnam.

Other than the proposed hiring for the Vizag SEC, Wipro also plans to expand its operations to Vijayawada, Kakinada and Tirupati; and also in Telangana State. The company has also sought a 50-acre land area in Hindupur (Antantpur district) for setting up a Rs 500-crore plant for manufacturing soaps and fatty acids.

According to the details shared by Wipro, the company will develop 5 lakh sq ft of space on a 3.1-acre plot which it has got from the Government. The plot has been accorded SEZ status, after Wipro’s Chairman Azim Premji met with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and got a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the State’s government on Sunday.

The 3.1-acre plot is part of the 7.1 acres which was allotted to Wipro in 2004, by the then Congress government. While the company has developed two lakh sq ft of space in 4 acres and provided jobs to 650 people, the remaining land remained unutilised. With the government proposing to reclaim the unutilised land, Premji met Naidu to sort out the issue.

In a press conference after the meeting, IT Minister Palle Raghunatha Reddy said graduate and post-graduate programmes will be offered by Premji Foundation for Andhra Pradesh students, who will be absorbed into the company after they acquire the requisite skills.
