Wockhardt Hospitals, after a major shaving a few year back, is now readying to move ahead with expansion plans. Five years ago, the private chain of tertiary care centres had sold more than half of their hospitals to Fortis.

Out of their 17 hospitals, Wockhardt had to sell 10 hospitals to Fortis to repay debt. But stepping over that stone, Wockhardt has come a long way and have already unveiled their new hospital in South Mumbai.

According to the company, they have invested Rs 350 crore ($59 million) to build the 350-bed hospital. It comprises of the Wockhardt Heart Institute and Wockhardt Critical Care Institute, and this will add to the existing eight units that houses 1,600 beds through Goa, Nagpur, Nasik, Rajkot, Surat and Mumbai.

Wockhardt Hospitals has apparently joined hands with the US-based Partners Medical International (PMI), previously known as Harvard Medical International (HMI). This will help them up their services with professional and technical advices and keep up with the global standards of healthcare.

HabilKhorakiwala, the founder chairman of Wockhardt Group, said that the new hospital in South Mumbai was launched due to Mumbai’s need for emergency services. The new facility, according to him, will be the bridging any medical gap formed in Mumbai.“Our association with Boston’s key hospitals including Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute will ensure that the best medical expertise in the world is available to the patients here,” he added.

The organization’s expansion dreams will be taking root in Delhi, where another 350-bed hospital is being planned within 2 years.Khorakiwala said that the facility would be similar to the one currently launched in Mumbai and will be a multi-specialty hospital with an investment of Rs 350 crore.

The new multi-speciality hospital in South Mumbai will stand on a long-term agreement with Adams Wyline Memorial Hospital Trust, who are the original lessee of the area. With respect to that pact, the hospital will have 30 beds set aside for free, to be used by people who are unable to meet the hospital financially.

In a bid to strengthen their presence in India, Wockhardt is scanning states like Maharashtra and Gujarat, where they hope to build hospitals in tier II cities in the future.
