150 Unauthorized Waste Dumps in the city
on Day 1 of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s Zero-Garbage Week, a total of 150 unauthorized waste dumps in the city were identified. The drive, to go on till May 8, is not only aimed at keeping the city litter-free,but also studying the patterns of garbage generation so that the routes of waste collection vehicles can be reworked.
According to the BMC’s solid waste management department, most of the unauthorized spots are in the vicinity of public toilets and on inaccessible lanes inside densely-populated slums as well as kaccha roads like those in Geeta Nagar (Colaba) and collector’s land where waste-collection vehicles can’t reach.
A ward in Fort has 13 such spots, including Crawford Market and VB Gandhi Marg. Some of the other unauthorized dumps have been located at Banganga (Malabar Hill), NM Joshi Marg and near Masina Hospital (both in Byculla),Carter Road and Milan Subway.
Bhalchandra Patil, chief engineer with the solid waste management department, said that those found littering will be penalized. Notices will be issued under Section 381 of MCGM Act which allows the BMC to prosecute erring parties if garbage isn’t cleared within 30 days.
