Tardy response to distress calls
Mumbai Police says the response time to the distress number – 100 – is between four to eight minutes but Police response was in the range of ten to 18 minutes. In most cases cops arrived late and either disappeared without taking any action against the troublemakers or asked a few obligatory questions without showing any intention of making further inquiries.
Malfunctioning GPS devices and a faulty air-conditioner that affects their sophisticated caller ID system are hampering Mumbai Police’s response to distress calls.
According to sources, the control room is equipped with advanced caller identification system that can track every caller’s name and location. Engineers on the job claim most of these are badly damaged thanks to the faulty air-conditioning system which plays havoc with the computer servers.
What’s more, 500 police vehicles are fitted with sophisticated Global Positioning System (GPS) which enables police to trace the vehicle nearest to the crime spot. But the three-year-old GPS receivers are so ill-maintained, they often malfunction.
