Police against BBMP’s ‘Freedom Park’ plans
Police are furious with the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) plans to construct a Palike Bazaar and an underground parking lot at Freedom Park.
Police have been allowing protests, demonstrations and large gatherings at Freedom Park as they fear the proposed projects at Freedom Park will result in an acute space crunch.
A police officer said they have been allowing small public meetings and demonstrations at Bannappa Park on KG Road near Cauvery Bhavan and Mahatma Gandhi statue on MG Road. Freedom Park is the only place to conduct larger meetings where managing and regulating traffic and parking is easier. But the BBMP’s proposed projects can cause an acute space crunch, he added.
Mayor D Venkatesh Murthy, who was impressed by the Palika Bazaar in New Delhi, announced in last week’s budget that a Palike Bazaar would be constructed behind Freedom Park, and earmarked Rs 5 crore for it.
