The KEM Hospital casualty department had 35 cases by evening. “Out of them, five were with grievous injuries and 10 had been involved in assault cases,” the medical officer on duty said.

Sion Hospital received 31 cases, out of which three had to be admitted. State-run hospitals also received many patients. “Out of the total 42 who were brought to hospital, 12 had to be admitted. Many were cases of drunk driving, while many others were brought in by the police after having fights,” said Dr T P Lahane.

St George Hospital received many intoxicated patients too. “Two youngsters from well-to-do backgrounds came in the afternoon and fainted by the time they reached the casualty ward. They were taken to the intensive care unit, where we revived them. Their families have been informed. They were probably intoxicated after mixing bhang with other drinks,” said Dr Bob Daripa, chief medical officer. “Apart from them, more than 40 people suffering from fractures and other injuries and those in a drunken condition were brought to hospital,” he added.

Some children and adults had to be treated for eye injuries. “We received two cases where color had entered the eyes. We washed their eyes with sterile water and they were then sent home,” said Dr Radhika Srinivasan from the Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital.
