Residents of Nolambur again plans to construct road

No Comments Sub Category:Chennai,Cities,Civic Issues,Maintenance Posted On: Jan 14, 2013

road constructionChennai- There is no proper road which connects Nolambur area to the main road. For many years, residents registered their complaints to the concerned authorities but all vain. Thus the residents of Nolambur took efforts to lay down the road. They have also dug bore wells in the complex for drinking water.

The only route which connects the apartment complex to Bharathi Salai is Sri Ram Nagar main road. This road situated at West Mogappair was laid in October 2011.  According to the President of Federation of Nolambur Residents Associations (FONRA), panchayat authorities could not take any actions because the road was under lot of litigation. Thus the residents of Nolambur pooled their resources and decided to do it themselves. Seven associations donated around Rs 70,000 for this good purpose.

But now, the road they laid is in bad state. A case has been filed against the corporation. If a good response is seen, they will again plan to reconstruct the road through  pooled fund.  Chennai corporation cleared residents that they are not allowed to lay their own roads without the civic body’s permission.

Similar type of efforts were shown by residents of Jai Nagar years ago. They made an attempt to lay a road which would connect to  the arterial Inner Ring Road. Many residents are taking initiative to address all kind of civic problems in their neighbourhood. This is  seen all around the Chennai city especially in the suburbs.

As per experts problem related to civic issue can only be resolved by knowing public needs. Exnora International can be a good example in this respect. It has taken many initiatives like capacity building programmes for residents welfare associations.  Here Government and people both plays important role. If there are issues like garbage clearance, people can observe the segregation at source.

They also provided underground drainage facility at Giriappa Road slum in T Nagar. Rotary and Lions club also contributed by connecting the septic tanks of huts to a pipeline that was connected to the corporation sewer.  Since a heavy cost was evolved, government initially disagreed, but later on every hut paid Rs 100 for their connection.  Seeing this, nearby eight slum areas also replicated it.
